271 years before the famous Pantone color guide, an artist by the name A. Boogert, sat down and hand wrote, along with painted, an 800 page watercolor mixing encyclopedia in Dutch. The book contains details on the mixture of colors, how much water should be added to produce a particular shade, and its effects. This is pretty amazing considering Pantone wasn't published until 1963. Only a rare few must have had the opportunity to view the book back in the good ol' days, since it was the only copy written, and was intended for educational purposes. This discovery excited the art history nerd inside of me! I need a time machine...
The book is currently kept at Bibliotheque Mejanes in Aix-en-Provence, France. Go here for a closer look at this treasure!
